Rotary Technology Tournament
Today the following students represented Silcoates at The Rotary Technology Tournament which took place at the St John Charles Centre, South Leeds. 42 teams entered the competition competing in Basic, Intermediate and Advanced categories.
Brianna Merridale, Billy Hirst Holiday and Hannah Wainwright entered the Basic Task which ironically was anything but Basic! Jack Robinson, Hannah Macro, Alistair Wood and Kristina Hall Jackson entered the Intermediate task and Lauren Dungworth, Max Ansell Wood, Beth Palin and Jack Parry entered the Advanced task.
Students were required to design, manufacture and test a Weight Powered Vehicle. The vehicle had to be powered solely by a 200g weight and it had to climb as far as possible, up a track rising 150mm over a 1.5m length. The vehicle had a height restriction of 400mm and it had to carry an advert for Green Power as well as having a flag that is raised mechanically as the vehicle moved.
Materials and tools were restricted and students were assessed on their planning, design analysis, design development, realisation and on the quality of their portfolio.
All three teams were highly praised for their design portfolios and complimented for their excellent conduct throughout the day. The Sixth Form team won in the advanced category and were presented their certificates and the winning trophy by The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr. Michael Fox. Also in attendance was the Governor of Rotary District 1040, Rotarian Keith Davison.
An excellent day was had by all. The students were a pleasure to take out of school and were not only a credit to the school but also themselves.

Year 9 Group Work
At the start of today's lesson, Year 9 discussed their ideas for USB memory sticks. They each had 5 minutes to present their idea and then field constructive criticism from their group.

Year 9 Xmas Malteser giveaway challenge
To kick off their introduction to Product Design, students spend their first lesson learning about innovation.
After looking at a range of products they experience their first mini challenge - design and model a product to promote Maltesers for Xmas - in only 40 minutes!
The winner gets a bag of Maltesers - today's winner was Vicky Newton who had the cool idea of a tube/spoon design, so when you've eaten the Maltesers you keep hold of the spoon!
